Autumn is sewing weather

By: Elaine Rose

I decided to lay out the blocks I'd made of Bonny Hunter's scrappy Carolina Christmas quilt today, but I had to delay sewing them together due to some unwanted assistance. The blocks are sewn into rows now, but due to the delay, I didn't get the rows together! What is it about cats and quilts? When she finally moved she decided to annoy hubby who was using his laptop by making herself comfortable on the carry bag. Chino always knows how to get attention.

Autumn is here at last! Well, I've always been told that the first crocus to flower is the sign the weather has changed and Autumn is here. Whether it's an old wives' tale or not, I've had a real crop of them, but this weekend's weather has been anything but autumnal, with over 30 degrees.

It has been a worrying few days with family in Queensland in the path of the cyclone, but thankfully it turned away before reaching them, and they just got some of the winds.
My thoughts are with those in the areas hit by the force of Ului and I trust that any damage is minimal. It makes me ponder on the fact that no matter how clever man is, we have no control over the forces of nature. We can be prepared, if we have sufficient warnings, we can build better structures using lessons learned from previous experiences to minimise the damage, but we can't control it and we can't always predict it..

When I spread my quilt top out to pin it to the batting and backing, I had to stop working on it because my cats decided it was their new bed! Also when I set a quilt up in a stand to baste it, one of my cats hid underneath and made himself at home. I know if I made a quilt specifically for them, they would ignore it -- they just want to be where they're not supposed to be!

They are amazing creatures aren't they? They know how to get our attention. Marianne's cat likes to use the quilt she has on the frame to machine-quilt, as a hammock.
